Hip Hop Violins

First, I can not thanks Ms. Kling enough for these amazing musical mixes that we have been watching. Until this term I have never utilized You Tube that often - for good reason. Once I start I cant stop watching. Hip Hop Violins was one of those videos that cost me 3 hours of sleep.
I had to keep looking for more!

I am in love with string instruments, I always have been. The Cello and violin are my favorite for the deep sound a cello can make like a bounding heart beat, to a sweet soothing sound a violin can make. I just recently saw Zac Brown on South Beach and would marry his fiddler - he is outstanding and melts my heart. I am going to the Transiberian Orchestra concert in December because of my love for Christmas music and string instruments and its nothing but extreme guitars among others.

This video was awesome, but - I found an artist that I cant seem to get enough of thanks to this video. On the side bar You Tube offers related videos, and to feed my yearning for more - I continued to watch more. Once I reached Josh Vietta - well it was game over. I had to watch every video, go to his website, google more music and videos. I would  drive cross country to find him on the streets playing the violin if I could. Again, wasted 3 hours playing on the computer when I should have been sleeping.

Even as I write this blog I have him playing in the background. It has always been a dream to learn a string instrument but my fingers are too small for the keyboard of a piano and my mother has forgotten the fundamentals of the violin as she only played it in high school. I know I will one day learn, right now its all science and nursing.

It fascinates me how far violins have come - once a  member of the just the orchestra - now its incorporated into some of the most played songs today. I laugh when I think of my cello obsessions as a child. The first time I found a song with the cello was when Hanson (yes, the all boy, brother band, my age Jonas Brothers) had their first album released and Yearbook was on there. There's a cello solo that resembles a heart beat while Taylor sings a solo - I continued to hit rewind a dozen times. Today, the song Secrets has an amazing violin part and I turn it up every time it plays.

I am keeping an eye out for Josh's performances and albums - he is crafty, a genius, my heart melts with each note - - haha sounds like a NY times review, but its not a lie!

In reference to the video I did watch, the young guy is very talented - has an album and from the other videos I watched - he sings too.

Just WOW!!!

Free Hugs

I have seen this campaign everywhere in North Carolina but not so much in Miami. Then again, I do not venture through south beach or the malls as often as I would at home. As the video progressed my friend said my smile got bigger and bigger and she was forced to peak over my shoulder to see what I was watching.

So we watched it again together.

I am all smiles and I love hugs. I understand why it took a while to get the hugs he was looking for. I did notice that a lot of the women that walked by gave him a nice big smile, maybe a nod or a hello - I would have to. Not sure if I would have gone up to him to give him a hug - then again - maybe I might. Having a camera around does help. It's difficult to trust people these day, I am proud of all those that did hug him.

What a fun video- I am sure they had a great time doing it. The song fit pretty well with the video.

Not much to say here - Just smiling and looking for hugs myself.

Homerun

This is not the first time I have seen this video - I saw it when it was first aired on ESPN not long ago - in fact I beleive the other teammates were invited to the ESPY for the sportsmanship award - where they replayed this video and interviews.

This is a prime example of what sportsmanship is all about. Being that this is a championship game, - thats what makes this such a great momment in sports. Aside from their actions - it allowed women to top the charts in what is still a male dominated activity. Being from the south, In have witnessed such acts in most sports.

I remember one friend from highschool who was such a softie. He played some awesome football as a wide receiver and excellent basketball - however, he was always getting fussed at by the coaches during the game. Not because he was making mistakes - he was an incredible play maker - but he would stop dead in his tracks to help another player up after knocking him down. He was a pretty stout guy so it was easy to get pushed around. During basketball season he was always giving a hand to opposing teams when the play was over. Coach would always say, Adrian, this is no time to play the nice guy card - get over here"
It was just a part of his nature, part of his raising. I knew when he went to college he would carry the same mannerisms, and at every football game he never disappointed me. It is difficult for me to imagine a moment when someone wouldn't help. Where the game was far more important than the enjoyment of playing. I could turn on my determination just as fast as I could turn it off if I saw someone in danger or hurting - needing help - regardless of the team they are on.

I enjoyed watching this again.

SPIN

WoW! I was not prepared for this video. It was incredible. I loved the beat, and I had to watch it several times before I started realizing the true meaning in the message. I couldnt stop tapping my feet to the beat. I tried sitting still in my seat - ha forget it.

The message was interesting. At first I was thinking, okay the DJ is learning a lesson in meddling with time. You change one event you change a dozen and the outcome is more than likely not going to be what you intended. One injured person was far better than the many he injured in the first try. As he kept trying, he started to notice the other people that were involved but not directly involved. YOu cant just change an event, you have to change the people affected by the event for a better outcome. I was curious of why he couldnt keep the ball from falling out of the bag in the first place - but that would defeat the purpose of the video.

As he kept trying, more humans errors came into view. I absolutely enjoyed the frustration look in his face as he had to keep going - the determination he had to get it right.

When he starts studying the others in the scene, he gets that "Ok" I get it look on his face and knows what needs to be done. Once he takes in all the dangers, he backs it up and changes actions from all angles, which is depicted by him highlighting each person and they circle on the screen as if being analyzed.

Then the real fun begins with the old man reliving old memories with a basketball, his wife taking in the scene wishing to join, takes a chance to stand out of the wheelchair. The student street dancing for money observes the old man bouncing the ball and takes the beat into his steps, thus intriguing the little girl who passes through the "shadow of death" to get a better view. The three men with the weapons are awed by the innocence and part ways, avoiding a fight. The biker bumps into a business man, knocking something out of his hands which then the dog runs after the object but stopped by a young man. The dog owner, a young woman, rushes after her dog, thankful the young man was there to catch him and a relationship builds. The biker is never hit by the car and another friendship builds between business man and the biker. The drug dealer takes in the entire view, looks at the old couple longing to be sharing a life with someone at their age. He then looks at the young couple who just met thanks to the dog longing for a relationship. He then sees the college student break dancing for money and drops all he has into his glass - knowing the student will use it for more good than himself. Thus, everything is balanced and he is pleased with his work. "It is good"

My favorite part was at the end when the little girls doll breaks. Representing innocence and having the ability to see things that adults do not - she looks at the DJ. Baffled by the experience he looks around to make sure she is staring at him with pleading eyes to fix her doll. After all he has done, it seems silly and he walks away but quickly stops in his steps to fix her doll then dashes out of sight. The child had the remarkable ability to sense the presence of the DJ and understood who he was, and what he was capable of.

It was an interesting view of how God works in our lives everyday and how others affect our lives whether it be directly or indirectly. Our actions have a part in others lives, no matter how small. Take a look at the basketball - a small object that causes chaos and affects everyone.

I cannot express how much I enjoyed this video - the creativity is outstanding. I only wish I was capable of making such videos - but I will play my part by watching and enjoying!

Eye Writer

I am absolutely speechless and in awe. I have always known that people in this world were meant to do good things, and after this video it makes me proud to be apart of this wonderful place. When it comes to graffiti I am partial with the idea because it's still vandalism - but when I look at it subjectively - I see it as a masterpiece of art. There is no way I could take a spray can of paint create anything near what I see, and it's usually done pretty quickly.

Watching Tempt be given the opportunity to live a quality of life he can enjoy from a hospital bed was heart warming. He is quality of life has just been enhanced by the ability to draw and express his work.

To the team that invented this software, and took the time to really get to know Tempt, and be by his side every step of the way was also inspiring. I am sure they spent sleepless nights and long hours developing and testing the software. And then spending a large amount of time in the hospital with him, and on the streets projecting his work. This is not a team working for money, they are working to help improve the lives of others. I cannot imagine the gratification they get sitting there watching Tempt create his masterpiece with his eyes. It's like seeing art through the artist eyes - just imagine what enhancements will be done in the future!!!

This could be used as a communication technique to those who are paralyzed and unable to talk. Write little messages and verbalize again with families, or doctors. I wonder if Tempt communicates with his father that way? They could create a keyboard, shortcuts to simple words to create messages using the eyes to point and click - - OUTSTANDING!

Self Audit

I write with a lot of emotion including: Anger. Faith. Frustration. Beliefs. Strength. - all descriptions that come to mind once I finished reading my blogs.

I am also a bit of an exaggerator, for example: in my homeless blog - I make a biblical stance saying:
...  I would never cast the first stone -
but then I go on to say
this made me want to throw a boulder...

completely irate at the moment I could tell. It also made me laugh just a little, despite the subject, my response is what would be considered childish - a little.  Made me realize  more than I knew, that there are some situations that I am very sensitive and passionate about. There was a lot of frustration in the homeless blog and I could tell I felt out of control because the writing was - a little out of control. This out of control emotion continues to the next video about the Haitian slaves. The first word on that blog is "ANGER" typed in all caps and colored in red. I didn't let up on my emotions, in fact I spent a great deal of time asking rhetorical questions in what appears to be a much needed venting session.

For both the Homeless and Slave blog, I appear to get really angry at those that refuse to take responsibility for themselves. For example,
The  homeless blog I am angry about this woman in Walgreens who cant afford to care for her kids, but yet is pregnant again. Upon listening to her viral conversation on the phone - she clearly has no intention of trying to care for her kids - she is simply leaning on extended family and friends. Then there's the Haitian slaves where I am asking rhetorical questions to the parents of the kids who themselves were once slaves and still willing to put their kids through it. There is also an incidence where I am angry at the Haitians that live in the States that simply ran without looking back - while the world looks at the US to help.
Yeah - those two subjects absolutely raised my blood pressure which is clear in my words. I could tell that I felt held back, that they were enjoying the wonders of motherhood while I am taking the responsible route and waiting until I married, with a stable income so I can enjoy my kids and my life. I often fill the void of children by babysitting on the weekends, and nothing makes me happier.

It is clear that the posts that gave me the hardest time were the homeless and the slaves - but in the end, after much venting and frustration - I find peace. Usually in the form of taking a strong stance in my faith and knowing that I make a difference when and where I can. My Faith - the strength and the belief of my faith continues to show in most of my posts. Usually in the ones that made me angry or sad - but there was one blog,  Did you know - that was generally positive but I still unconciously mentioned the work of God. There are many instances where I mention the belief I have in myself and in other people. It is clear that I generally believe we are all capable of doing good things in the world and creating a change. The lost Generation blog was perfectly placed in this term - because reading it reflects what I learned from the harsh videos of the past. I even made a few comments I couldn't believe came from me:

By being positive, she then reversed the message, thus reversing the outcome. And that is what change is, it's finding the positive. Reversing the negative, and thus reversing the outcome...

I believe in people, and I believe that they are good. I believe in my generation, most importantly I believe in myself.

Reading that just made me tear up because there are days that are hard - reflected in the posts that made me angry or upset - and then there are days that I am inspired, such as the Lost Generation and the Did you know. I would almost diagnose myself to be bipolor with the constant fluctuation of emotions. However, I wouldnt need to read these blogs to know this fact about myself. My lovely boyfriend tells me all the time that I am extremely intuned with myself and others emotions and thats what makes me a great nurse and a compasionate friend. I believe this trait is what makes me a great customer service rep at the spa, as well as a great nurse at the doctors office. In fact, I hear it everyday about how refreshing it is to have someone "Nice" to talk to. In North Carolina, I blend in, but in South Florida - I am an instant hire.

I never would have thought blogging thoughts, ideas and in my case anger/frustrating emotions would demonstrate where I stand on certain subjects. I read them and couldnt believe these words were mine. I never thought of myself to be a good writer - but from this - I am indeed an emotional writer and could possibly catch the emotions of a reader. I can tell that I am a southerner by heart because none of my blogs are short, and much like this current blog - is more like a diary entry with my mind doing the typing.  My blogs followed no specific structure but usually followed the video from beginning to end. The only blog that was short was This Too Shall Pass, but I believe the previous blogs took an emotional toll on me and I was forced into a few moments of silence. Infact, if I remember correctly, I made a hot cup of tea and went straight to bed which my boyfriend found extremely strange.

Over all,  I appear to be very strong, easily frustrated, but still strong with an intense ability to express my emotions freely - even if it is in a blog that not many would read. It is also clear to me why I was never able to commit to a diary as a child. Before computers, I would have been forced to hand write my emotional entries and as  I would like to consider myself to now be a  mature, patient and well balanced adult - - I can not imagine the fluctuating emotions I went through as a teen, let along trying to write it all down!!!

DId you know

Hm. It is interesting that I watch this video soon after having a conversation at work when one of our computers crashed and we were scrambling to get it fixed. With the medical field relying on technology more and more each day - we panicked when we lost the appointment schedule, patient charts etc. Thankfully - I work for a Doctor who considers himself to be of dinosaur age and we do both paper and computer charting  and print the schedule the night before.

But it made us all realize how much we use technology. I cant remember the last time I actually had a personal phone conversation on my cell phone. Okay - that might be an exaggeration as my mother does not know how to text and I spoke to her on Sunday. But aside from her, including my dad who is an avid texter, I spend most my time texting as opposed to actually talking.

As to the education references - I agree that what I learned my freshman year in anatomy changed by my third year - but it wasn't really a change but rather an enhancement or extension to what we already knew. I don't believe there will be many instances where we have to go back and say ooops - we were wrong - except for research - it's always wrong accompanied by a few facts and hopeful assumptions.

Awe - myspace. Dont actually have an account, but take a look at facebook and I am there. Social networking has expanded and is now on the business route for advertising. Infact, both my employers have facebook accounts for future clients and patients to browse. Internet Dating - not a participant, but I know friends that do because they have outgrown the college days and its hard to meet a decent partner at a bar or night club.

I shocked by the data China released for conception - in fact, I would like to see the source the author of the video got his information from. Reason I question, is last I heard, China had a limit on children and there is an ever growing demand of girls needing adopting because every family wants a boy to carry the family name. That would require some more research. I am also shocked by the small number the US has for births - I believe its because of the economy and marriage happening much later in life or not at all.

About the future and our technology (I think I watched a video incorporating that thought at the beginning of this term) - I look forward to the future. Seems many are afraid of change and the future - but I like the idea of just having a "future." Sure, I dont know what the future holds for me, but I'd like to think its bigger and better than I could ever imagine. Take a look at our older generations - they are on overload with the changes but I dont think they would complain about computers, internet, the ease of travel and banking and the ability to keep in touch with friends and family in ways that they could never have dreamed possible.

I say - bring on the future of technology. I believe in people and I believe that they have morals, I don't believe that there will ever be an "AI" where the world is taken over by computers. Mother nature still rules this planet as God intended it to be- and we humans like to think we are in control but she will balance herself out.

Overall - entertaining. I loved how he used the music at the end to match what would be a racing heartbeat and the author attempts to scare the viewer about the future! Classic scare tactic.

Lost Generation

WOW! That was not what I expecting. At first I was thinking - oh here we go again. Another bash of what my generation is coming to be. Another negative video and then BAMMM, she reversed it. I had to pause for a minute to make sure that nothing changed. The wording was still the same forwards and backwards.

I am speechless. A little caught off guard. I watched it 3 times to make sure I got the message. Not only did this change my point of view, but showed me how EASY it is to do the opposite on a flip. Literally, she was negative, and then flip, she was positive and reversing the text. It was Genius! By going positive, she then reversed the message, which then reverses the outcome.
And that's what change is, its finding the positive. Reversing the negative, and thus reversing the outcome. I absolutely enjoyed it.

It was visually simple. Easily comprehendable.

I felt the same way she did. Yes, right now I am working. Yes, right now it is important. But if there was something going on in my family - not even a question, I would be there. Once I start my own family, I will have saved enough that I can and will put them first. I do like a quick fix, but sometimes that quick fix, lets me do something more important that is positive. I still know what patience is. I still enjoy the journey of getting somewhere, just sometimes want it to be a fast, short one. I don't think we are lost, i think we are looking at things from all angles before making a move. Weighing in the options, learning from others mistakes. Taking our time. We are getting married later, we are having kids later - we are looking at the more permanent. I think, we will have a less divorce rate, yet we will be more independent. We are a more stimulated generation. Technology did that. Constantly moving, changing, deciding.

I am environmentally conscious, and I truly believe that my generation is going that way. Look at friends for change. Look at the research. We are being forced to reverse the effects of our ancestors, and we will.  I believe in people, and I believe that they are good. I believe in my generation, most importantly I believe in myself.

This too shall pass

Brough back some memories:
mouse trap
soccer
loved the flags - I was in color guard
dominoes
plinko

I wonder how many tv screens they busted or if its video editing. is this all one take, or many takes edited to perfections. Didnt care fort the music much, wasnt even sure what was being said. Not familiar with the group at alll, but their creativity level is phenominal. It was entertaining. Something positive, easy to watch compared to the last couple of videos we have seen.

I liked that it all started with one domino - and that one domino made alot of incredible, visually effective events happen. I am sure that was no accident - getting the point across that one person can cause a domino effect, effecting all those around them.

Probably wouldnt watch it again, but found it interesting.

Mac VS PC

As I was enjoying the commercials with Justin Long - I am so over this mac vs pc business. I have used both, mac was good when I was photo editing, but I use pc because it is what I learned to use and I am comfortable with it.

The ONLY reason I would make an argument is if I needed a system to do a certain job, especially if my income depended on it. I have seen and read many arguments, and looked at the pros and cons of each system. In the end, its just a marketing technique. Mac and PC want to battle - they want it to be forever on the minds of consumers. The more you "hear" of something, the more inclined you are to consider a purchase. The more commercials, the more publicity, the greater the desire. You get a celebrity on TV, such as youthful icon Justin Long and you just sold a Mac to every fan. It's smart, because consumers do not even realize they are joining the debate. They do not realize they are the targets, joke is on them. Not a very good joke, as both products are dependable and can be pricey.

My boyfriend is now a Mac fanatic, and yet he has NEVER owned a mac or even used one aside from the occasional click at the apple store. Every time a mac is on TV - whether it be a commercial or an actor using one, he pokes me saying -" look - look - APPPPLE!" I don't have the heart to show him the very short leash he has just been put on. Now, he doesn't even have to say anything, he just pokes me. I don't even bother to look up or acknowledge it anymore - I get the message.

I own an ipod, and yet I use a dell. Both compatible with each other. I have had very few issues with my dell and I imagine there are issue with apple - although, most mac users refuse to admit it.

To the video - I am a very big transformer fan. I was absolutely impressed with the graphics, and thought the plot to be entertaining. Did it sell me to dump my dell and buy a Mac - absolutely not.

Do I believe one is better than the other, no and I wont bother to waste my time playing the "his horse is bigger" game. Apple is a brand, just like a pair jeans. Some fit better on others. Some are faithful to what they have always known. Some do not care. Some like to show off new styles, stay with the trends. Me. I am comfortable. Like a good sleek look, the brand doesn't matter much. For right now, I need to get the jobs done. When I can take the time to explore a new fit, I am sure, if my boyfriend has anything to do with it - I will have access to both systems.

I use a PC. Does not MAKE me a PC. Makes me a consumer who chose a brand, is loyal to the brand and is happy with the brand.

Stand by Me

What a refreshing video to watch shortly after watching the slavery video that still sits on my heart. I still cannot get over the video I watched, looked into the eyes of those children.

This song did bring me some hope. I re-enforced prayer. Music is so powerful, and music has always been something dear to my heart. My mother sings in worship every morning as she pours her coffee in the kitchen. I sing as I sit in traffic, looking for songs to fit my mood or put me in a better place as I try to find patience behind the wheel.

I played this over and over just to hear real people sing a moving, inspiring song that I have known since I was a child. I do not have much to say about this post - I am moved and want to enjoy the peace of my heart for the evening.

Restaveks

anger. 16 kids? really? you were a "slave" and you remember what it was like - and you didnt get any better. did  you rise above the family or do better? NO - and yet you are comfortable doing this to your kids?? The mothers looked relieved as they were pointing to the children that they were handing off to slavery. They are a burden, not wanted. The poor kids have no idea what awaits them. You can see it on their face that they dont understand. They have no feelings, they think its normal. They sing of suffering - 8 year olds singing of suffering????? They should barely know the definition of the word, let along have an understanding beyond their years. They should be exploring. Learning. Enjoying their youth. What lazy, irresponsible parents!! - A mother says- "I dont work, i depend on them to work" What does she do? I did not see a handicap, no physical disability. Overall she looked healthy.

This clip really made me mad and at the same time it  hardened my heart. For a few moments I did not feel any remorse for those parents. I was angry at them for dumping these children for the world to take care of. Not taking responsibility. Not using protection to prevent pregnancy. They were out for their own satisfaction in their sexual ways, and let nature run its course - knowing they can dispose of the children. Most of those children will grow to be adults, who will then either do exactly what their parents are doing or try to flee the country. Most likely make an attempt to the states with the possibility of losing their life on the dangerous journey. Then what - they will not only be a burden to their parents, but now will be a burden to the economy of the United States and thus the world.

Watching this made my problems disappear. I was ashamed complaining about my computer malfunctioning and having to wait a few hours to get it fixed. What I deal with every day is nothing of what these kids have to go through. Sad part is, no one is there to pity them. No one is there to hold their hands, or console them when their body hurts from working. No one is going to be there when they get older to prevent the same happening to their children.

Where does the chain end and who is responsible to stop it? That for me is the most difficult question to answer. Is it our responsibility to help them, do we take on the burden by adopting these children and spending money, time and resources on education proper parenting techniques?
The Christian in me says, no question about it - absolutely you help.
But the human in me, the human that gets up every morning to get to work, do my homework, take care of those dependent on me and pay the bills - says - No, you cannot help. They made their bed, they sleep in it. They need to take responsibility for their own country. Their own actions. This is their culture, who am I to say how they run it? Who am I to say there's a right and wrong to parenting? Who am I to say they can have 16 kids?

And then I find myself asking, what about those Haitians that live in the United States. Those lucky enough to get out - do they look back? Do they try to help? Are they teaching right and wrong to the younger generations? I would like to say yes, but I know a few of them. And they haven't even looked back to their country. They go out with every intention of never looking back. They cut all communication with their family, and only recently made an attempt to contact them because of the disaster this spring.

Thats another thing - what happened during that devastating earthquake in the spring of 2010? The country was in a bad shape when this video was shot in 2007 - those 8 year olds are now 11, which means most of them are now at child bearing age, assuming they are healthy enough. It wont be long before they are already having chidlren, and with them being so young and not knowing any better - the cycle begins.
I am unfortunately torn between my christian self and my selfish self. I want to help, but I also intend on living my life. I work hard so that I can enjoy things in life - - what does that say about me? I know i will never be able to cure the world - I do help when and where I can. The rest I will not dwell on, but I can pray.

Hunger in South Florida

The clip "Hunger in South Florida" was extremely difficult to watch. In fact that whole concept of being homeless and hungry is hard for me to grasp. I had never, never, never seen a homeless person until I moved to Miami. Yes, I participated in food drives for school and helped at soup kitchens but most of the homeless were more jobless.

Let me share a few stories about my "homeless" people in North Carolina:

My uncle was homeless, but for him it was a decision he made. He chose to use his money on alcohol until he drank his way out of the family and disappeared for years. It's a small town so we always caught wind of where he "might" be and it usually involved a Salvation Army.

I had a friend's mother help a homeless person land a job but by the end of the week, he decided he earned more money hanging out by the highway and quit.

My dad used to give money to a man that lived on the streets in Charlotte and had a dog with him. He's a food salesman so he always kept a few items in his car and dog treats in the event he passed by him. He told me he did this for years while heading to and from work. Then one day, there was a news story in Chapel Hill while I was visiting a friend in college and that same man was being arrested. I called my dad, as the story was getting ready to start. It began with a clip of the man sitting on the streets in Charlotte with a dog, and ended with the man in Raleigh North Carolina who owns TWO homes that are rented to tenants outside the city. Ever since then I have had a hard time distinguishing a true homeless person to a fake.

The truth is, until I moved to Miami, homeless to me was a choice. If you were homeless in North Carolina you were either lazy, hiding from the law or a scam artist.

Until I saw this video, I had a different view on what homeless meant. This short clip was heart ripping. I broke down in tears 3 minutes in, barely able to see the screen by the end. I felt helpless and ashamed for ever complaining about my not so difficult wonderful life. I had this strong sense of urgency, like something has to be done right now, this cant be true. I felt guilty for feeling so strongly about the homeless as lazy, scam artist or hiding.

Reality sank in and it was a hard truth to accept. I work at one of the most beautiful resorts in South Florida, and see all the locals and members flaunt their money by the dozen everyday. Nice Cars. Jewelry. Clothes. I usually have to hear them go on and on about how hard life is for them, and I watch this video and say how stupid. Are they really that naive, one lady's maid had left and she was stuck with the laundry and panicked!

Now what? What do we do?
I am a college student, living paycheck to paycheck what voice do I have? How much power do I have to create change? I have a cabinet of canned goods, I wanted to call the young man in the video and send it to him. I cant remember many times in my life where I was out of control, unable to help relieve the problem.

This is a real problem! Its a problem that no one wants to face because of the harsh reality of it. But these are children suffering, and alot of them come from families that truly try. That was the hardest for me to accept - the families TRY! They send their kids to school, they try to make ends meet and at the end of the day they come up with nothing. I know those parents starve themselves so their children can eat. I don't have kids but I know I would. There needs to be a better system.

I know the system is broken and corrupt because I have seen how it works:
There are families struggling to make ends meet and then there are families reproducing at a fast rate but somehow able to get their welfare checks, when in my opinion they don't even deserve it.

2 examples:

I am a strong believerer in faith, and I would never cast the first stone or judge someone but I have come across two instances in South Florida where I wanted to throw a boulder!

First, I was in Walgreens at the Take Care Clinic just trying to get a TB skin test done for my employer. It was the Friday before school started and I couldn't believe the amount of children running around waiting for physicals. There was a Caribbean woman ( I could tell by the accent) sitting next to me yelling on her cell phone. She was pregnant, and had 3 kids with her causing most of the chaos with bouncing balls. She was using profanity left and right screaming at a man about how he better get some money from somewhere because she doesn't know if the welfare checks will be arriving next week. She called him a few names and then hung up and called her mother. Told her mother that the boys need to leave because she has to bring the kids over, they have no food and maybe no place to stay until next week. She then tells her she is at *#&$* Walgreens trying to get physicals for the kids because the school wont let them in until they do. She then goes on about how she hates Miami, their rules.... and then says, this Dr. better accept 3 for 1, cause I am not paying $100 for these kids to be told they are healthy. AND SHE"S PREGNANT AGAIN! Seriously? If I had a child, I would not speak that way in front of them. I was embarrassed to even be within an ear shot of her. She must have a large family that supports each other because the children looked pretty healthy, a little dirty but they are kids and seemed pretty happy. Out of control, but happy. What are we teaching our youth? The kids were adorable, I would have taken them home myself if I new I could.

My next incident was with a friend of mine. Her and her husband moved here because her husband is attending medical school. They just got married, have a 5 year old son and at the time of meeting were expecting another child. They were the sweetest couple I had ever met. Very loving originating from Utah. After a few get togethers, I learned that they were Mormon (there's quite a group here in Miami) and not working. She chose not to work not because she's pregnant but because she didn't see the need!!! I am also dating a medical student and I know there are great loans out there to live on but her next comment made me want to throw a boulder - they are living on welfare. He's taking a minimum amount of money in loans because of the other money they receive so they wont owe much later. OK.I tried to find reason,  they just moved to Miami, just got married, have a son and expecting another one. She is not planning on working, but maybe in a year or two when the kids get older she will. She is now pregnant again with her third child and he is going into his 3rd year of medical school. They are young, is it really that hard to wait until you have things settled so you can ensure stability for your kids????? I mean 1 okay whoops. 2,  just a playmate - it evens the score. But 3??? Talk about using and cheating the system.

I don't know much about the system not having been on any government support aside from student loans but I'd like to believe the system is better structured that what I am witnessing.

I have seen the real deal here in South Florida, you don't have to look far to see a homeless person or anyone struggling to make ends meets and its disturbing. But I think what's also disturbing is that some of these families try extremely hard to provide and others find ways to get it handed to them on silver platters! Its one thing to get help and another to get help but have no intention in helping yourself.

This was an eye opening experience, and I half wished I could close my eyes and wish it were a dream. However, I know in my heart that's the root of the problem. We need to stop closing our eyes and start helping. I am at a loss of where to start aside from my church's soup kitchen. Once I am settled, I pray that I carry this incident in my heart and find a way to provide more when I know I can afford to.

Video - Information Revolution

First, the video its self demonstrates where we are in technology. Its creative, it makes you think and its a learning tool that my parents would never have seen in school. It brings visual learning to a new level. I absolutely enjoyed it.

The video didnt show me anything new. There were no new tricks, no alternative ways for research and no back door to finding information. The video merely tried to explain the complexity, the extent we as humans have reached to expand. Expand our thoughts and ideas. Expand our knowedge and research. Expand our world of technology.

Today's technology helps us find more resources faster. Helps us expand our knowledge in a time that would have taken Einstein years to write, publish and be read. And its all at our fingertips.

I remember my first reserach paper in grade school. I was required to find 5 books and 1 website to support my thesis that was to be four pages long. The amount of time I spent learning the Dewey Decimal system was a headache. I spent endless hours in the library photocopying resources and checking out books. I wasnt supposed to highlight in the books so I was forced to hand copy and sort all my supporting arguments on notecards and file them in a systematic way. Today I can imagine grade school students saying, "Dewey what?"

Today, I can scan my resources if they were books for highligting or go online and find the book electronically and copy and paste to a notecard. Students have the freedom to use both books and internet with limited constrictions as long as they are credible.

The information highway does have its draw backs as the video shows. Anyone can post information, anyone can alter information which can be misleading to the reader. Facts can be skewed, "buttered up", lost in rumors which requires the reader to be more responsible. We are required to do more research to get the facts; read multiple publications to get the truth. However, we as readers can do that from the comfort of our home and on our own time as the internet never closes.

Its goodbye to library hours for those fortunate to have a computer and internet at home. A downside is thanks to the information revolution students spend far more hours in school and much more on homework. School may start at 8 am (maybe earlier for some), but it doesnt end at the traditional 3:00pm. There's more work to be done and thats after club meetings, sport practices and lets not forget dinner.

I will end with a quote from my Southern Culture Lit professor from North Carolina,
"Ever wonder why school started at 8 am and ended at 3pm? Ever wonder why we have a bell for school? Who thought of that idea? I have a theory - the factories started at 8, and a bell rang. The factories ended or changed shifts at 3pm and a bell rang. It was a training tool. It allowed parents to get a full days work in while the children were gone and it acclimated children to what would soon be their schedule as an adult."

Thanks to the information highway and our expansion of technology school can start at anytime and I personally dont hear any bells.

There's freedom with technology but with freedom comes responsibility!
